From Banking to Bag Making: Rae Williams’ Crafting Journey

In this episode of The Bag Makers Sew-Ciety Podcast, I’m joined by Rae Williams, a talented bag maker, seamstress, and embroidery enthusiast from Kent. Rae shares her sewing journey, starting as a child crafting clothes for dolls, inspired by her mother and grandmother. From making her own clothes as a teenager to address fit and affordability, to exploring a variety of crafts like crochet and macramé, Rae’s passion for creating has always been a big part of her life.

After retiring early from her career as a senior banker, Rae found the time to fully embrace her love for sewing and crafts. During the COVID-19 lockdown, a friend introduced her to bag making—a hobby she initially hesitated to try but quickly fell in love with. Rae now incorporates beautiful embroidered details into her bags, blending Gothic-inspired designs and tone-on-tone patterns for a unique touch.

Rae discusses her involvement with a local bag-making group in Kent, where she connects with other sewists to share projects and techniques. She also moderates for Crafted by Leanne and enjoys testing patterns for other designers. Throughout our chat, Rae offers tips for combining embroidery with bag making, her favourite fabric and style choices, and her go-to resources for embroidery designs like Urban Threads.

Whether you're an experienced sewist or just love hearing about creative journeys, this episode is packed with inspiration and heartwarming stories from Rae’s craft-filled life.

Until next time happy sewing and may your bobbin always be full
