From the Big Screen to Your Sewing Table – Meet Emma Brassfield of Studio 7t7
If you're already deep into the world of bag making, then chances are the name Emma Brassfield or Studio 7t7 might have crossed your path. If it hasn't – well, let me introduce you to someone truly special.
Emma isn't just a talented bag pattern designer – she's a powerhouse of creativity, kindness, and collaboration. We've become great friends over the years, and what really shines through in everything she does is her belief in community over competition – a value I absolutely love and try to live by myself in the bag making world.
Emma’s journey into bag design is nothing short of magical. Before launching Studio 7t7, she worked as a costume designer in film and television – and not just any old TV shows, mind. We're talking Star Wars, Harry Potter, and even In the Night Garden. Talk about sewing stardust into her patterns!
Her transition into bag pattern design brought all that creative flair with it. Every Studio 7t7 bag pattern is packed with clear, easy-to-follow instructions, full picture guides, and even video tutorials to guide you every step of the way. You can tell from the moment you open one of her PDFs – this is someone who gets how we sewists think.
I’ve personally made quite a few of her patterns, including the brilliant Vicky May bag, which I’ve done a full sew-along and review over on my YouTube channel – The Bag Makers Sew-Ciety. It’s such a clever design, and the instructions? Spot on. I’ve also reviewed the lovely Nabette bag, which is another cracker from her collection.
One of my favourite things that Emma runs is her Bag Making Challenge. It’s a fab event that happens twice a year, and it’s a great way to get stuck into a new project alongside fellow bag makers. If you fancy joining in next time, just pop over to her website at www.studio7t7.co.uk and sign up to her mailing list to be the first to hear when it’s happening again.
Of course, whenever I make one of studio 7t7 bag patterns, I kit myself out with all the hardware and interfacing from my own shop – Me Made Makes (that’s www.memademakes.co.uk, if you fancy a nosey). As for fabric and vinyls, I like to mix it up a bit, and I’ll always let you know where I’ve sourced them from in the video or description so you can grab the same if you like the look. Spoiler alert lots of my goodies comes from Emma's Bag makers Box , I get, which come every other month if you haven't signed up for yours yet check out the link and if you use code DEB you can get £5 off your first box.
Thank you Emma for being a true inspiration.
Until next time, happy sewing and may your bobbin always be full.
Deb x
