The Power of Sewing Communities: How We Lift Each Other Up in Craft and Life

Updated: Aug 23

In this special episode of The Bag Makers Sew-Ciety Podcast, I took a moment to reflect on something that has become incredibly dear to me – the power of community within the sewing world. While our original guest, Katie, couldn't make it due to illness, it gave me the opportunity to shine a spotlight on the amazing people who make this journey so much richer. If you're new here, welcome! And to my regular listeners, thank you for being part of this incredible community that inspires me every day.

The Strength of the Sewing Community.

We all know that sewing can be a solitary craft. There's something meditative about sitting at your machine, focusing on your stitches, and creating something beautiful from a simple piece of fabric. But when you bring a group of like-minded creators together, the magic really happens. Over the years, I’ve witnessed how this community has evolved, and it’s been heart warming to see the ways in which we lift each other up, share tips, and even come to each other's rescue.

During the pandemic, this sense of community became even more important. Many of us were stuck at home, isolated, and feeling unsure about what the future held. But then, something incredible happened – we came together. Whether it was through making and distributing scrubs, sewing face masks, or simply offering moral support online, we rallied as a collective force for good. I remember logging onto my social media feeds and seeing posts from people all over the world sharing their sewing projects. It wasn’t just about creating; it was about connecting.

Acts of Kindness – The Heart of Our Community.

One of the most touching aspects of this community is the way we support each other. During those early days of the pandemic, when supplies were scarce and emotions were high, I saw countless acts of kindness. Whether it was someone dropping off fabric at a fellow sewer's doorstep or mailing out elastic for mask-making, these small gestures made a huge difference.

I remember hearing stories of neighbours who barely knew each other before but became fast friends through sewing supply exchanges. It wasn't just about the materials; it was about the thoughtfulness and care that came with each gesture. These acts of kindness weren’t just nice to see – they were lifelines that kept many of us going.

Combating Isolation Through Connection.

Let’s be real – sewing can be lonely sometimes. We spend hours at our machines, often with only our thoughts for company. But during the pandemic, many of us found solace in online sewing communities. What might have started as a simple hobby became a way to combat feelings of isolation. Chatting with others who understood the challenges of a tricky pattern or sharing the joy of finishing a beautiful project made all the difference.

Personally, sewing during the pandemic gave me a sense of purpose. It wasn’t just about passing the time; it was about doing something that brought me peace and kept me grounded. Having a community of fellow sewers to share that with – even virtually – was incredibly powerful.

Craft Fairs, Collaboration, and Community.

As restrictions lifted and we began returning to craft fairs and in-person events, the power of community continued to shine. One thing that stands out to me is how we all support each other, whether it's helping to set up stalls, lending a hand during busy times, or simply cheering each other on. Craft fairs can be intimidating, especially if you’re new to the scene, but with the backing of a strong community, they turn into opportunities for growth, learning, and friendship.

I’ve personally experienced this sense of camaraderie at fairs. There's something beautiful about watching fellow crafters band together, boosting each other's confidence and celebrating one another's successes. We aren’t just selling products; we're sharing a part of ourselves with the world, and having a community that understands that makes all the difference.

A Little Humour Goes a Long Way.

Of course, it wasn’t all serious business during this time. We also found ways to keep things light, even when the world felt heavy. I remember a particularly funny incident when I accidentally placed some Care Bear fabric in a way that turned out to be, let’s just say, a bit inappropriate! It gave everyone a good laugh, and moments like that reminded us all that humour is just as important as anything else in these challenging times. After all, sewing is supposed to be fun!

The Role of Online Communities.

While social media can sometimes feel overwhelming, there’s no denying that it has played a huge role in building and maintaining sewing communities. The internet has allowed us to connect with people we may never meet in person but who share our passion for sewing. Whether it's through Instagram challenges, Facebook groups, or YouTube tutorials, we’ve found ways to come together, share our projects, and support each other.

I’ve seen so many incredible friendships blossom online – people who started as strangers, united by a love of sewing, now supporting each other through life’s ups and downs. It’s a testament to the power of community and how, when we come together, we can create something truly beautiful.

Continued Inspiration.

As I reflect on this episode, I’m reminded of why I started this podcast in the first place – to connect with others who share my passion for sewing and to build a community where everyone feels welcome. Whether you’re a seasoned sewist or just picking up a needle and thread for the first time, there’s a place for you in this community. And it’s not just about sewing; it’s about the connections we make and the friendships that form along the way.

So, if you’re feeling a little isolated or just need some inspiration, remember that there’s a whole community out there ready to welcome you with open arms. We’re all in this together, stitching our way through life, one project at a time.

Thank you for being part of The Bag Makers Sew-Ciety, and for making this journey such a meaningful one. Let’s keep supporting each other, sharing our stories, and, most importantly, sewing with love.

Until next time, happy sewing and may your bobbin always be full

This brought home to me how sewing got me through the pandemic especially the early days as I was alone working from home and needed something to switch off. I took up sewing to occupy me and haven't stopped since.

I'm looking to try and do a craft fair this year or early next but have no idea where to start i.e. where to find one 🤔

Sewing definitely got me through the pandemic as well (did you catch the episode)

Where in the UK are you from, are you on Facebook there may be some event group that you can join and can start some research into local events that you can attend. I would definitely advise attending events as a guest first to see how well they are ran and attended before doing them as a stall holder.
