Fabric Bargains, Chapel Ceilings & Car Boot Chaos – My Favourite Fabric Haunt, Immanuel Fabrics
Now, I know many of us love a good rummage through our local fabric shops, but let me tell you about a place that takes rummaging to a whole new level – Immanuel Fabrics in Burnley, Lancashire. If you’ve never been, brace yourself – it’s like walking into a fabric lover’s dream (in a chapel, no less!).
Tucked away on Bright Street, this absolute treasure trove operates from an old chapel – and when I say it’s brimming to the rafters, I’m not kidding. Every corner, every nook, every bolt of fabric feels like it’s got a little story to tell. There’s even a £1-a-metre bargain room at the back – yes, you read that right!
Now, Burnley’s not exactly down the road for me – it’s a good 2 and a half hour trek – but I’ve only been once and I’m still dreaming about that day. The staff were brilliant, the banter was class, and by the time I’d finished shopping, my poor little Fiat 500 was practically scraping the tarmac with the weight of my haul. Worth every mile. Even better for us North Easterners – Immanuel Fabrics also pitch up at South Shields Market every Saturday, weather permitting. It’s just 20 minutes from me, and I’ve made it my Saturday morning ritual when I need a fabric fix. The lads on the stall are always happy to help, and if I give them a ring beforehand and ask for specific things – especially the faux leathers I love for bag making – they’re more than happy to bring them along.
I usually drag Grumpy (my other half, not an actual dwarf) with me to help carry it all back to the car – and I’m not even sorry. I always go overboard because the prices are just too good to pass up.
You won’t find a swanky website, but you can find them on their Facebook page, where they post updates, market appearances, and new stock.
If you’re into bag making like I am, and you’re always on the hunt for quality fabrics, faux leathers, and bargain finds, Immanuel Fabrics is well worth keeping on your radar.
So whether you're planning a little road trip to Burnley (pack light – you’ll come back heavy), or popping down to South Shields Market one weekend, I can’t recommend Immanuel Fabrics enough. Affordable, friendly, and absolutely full to the brim with sewing gems – what more could you want?
Got a favourite fabric stall or market haunt? Let me know – I’m always up for an adventure (and a full boot of fabric, obviously).
Until next time happy sewing and may your bobbin always be full
Deb x
