Updated: Aug 23

In this blog post, I'll give you a sneak peek into my delightful conversation with Maria. You'll get to hear about her early sewing experiences, favourite projects, and how she brings a personal touch to each of her creations. I'm sure you'll be itching to watch the full episode of The Bag Makers Sew-Ciety Podcast and dive deeper into Maria's world of sewing.

Maria’s Sewing Journey:

Maria's passion for sewing began at a young age, inspired by her mam and other family members who sewed. One of her earliest memories is making a bag from scraps when she was just 4 or 5 years old. This early start set the stage for a lifelong love of creating beautiful things with fabric.

Starting with Bag Making:

Maria's journey into bag making took off when she began helping her mam sell small sewn items. This experience sparked her curiosity, and she soon started learning to sew on her mam’s machine. Her first projects included reworking vintage clothes, but she eventually found her true calling in bag making when she needed a black bag that she couldn’t afford to buy.

Favourite Patterns and Designers:

When it comes to bag patterns, Maria has a soft spot for designs by Sincerely Jen and Blue Calla. One of her most challenging projects was the Boronia Bowler Bag, which pushed her skills to new heights. These patterns not only offer stylish designs but also challenge her to refine her sewing techniques.

Materials and Techniques:

Maria loves experimenting with different materials, particularly cotton drill denim and leather. She’s candid about the challenges of working with stiff leather and often modifies patterns to add more pockets, making each bag uniquely her own. Her creativity shines through in how she tailors each project to fit her vision.

Challenges and Achievements:

Every sewing journey has its hurdles, and Maria's is no exception. She shared her experience with a back pack by Dieselpunk Ro, a project she hand-stitched that tested her patience and skills. Another notable mention is her work with hair-on-hide leather, showcasing her ability to tackle complex materials.

Community Inspiration:

For Maria, inspiration often comes from the vibrant online sewing community. Facebook groups and YouTube channels, especially those by Lauren Mormino and Emma at Studio 77, are her go-to sources for new ideas and techniques. These platforms have been instrumental in shaping her approach to bag making.

Personal Touches in Bag Making:

Maria’s bags are more than just functional items; they’re a canvas for her creativity. She loves adding her own twists to patterns, learning new techniques, and adapting them to suit her style. This personal touch makes each of her bags a unique piece of art.

Community Engagement:

Despite becoming more of a hermit lately, Maria acknowledges the importance of staying connected with the sewing and bag making community. She emphasizes finding a sewing tribe, a group of like-minded individuals who can offer support and inspiration. Engaging with others keeps the creative spark alive and encourages growth.

Wrapping Up:

Maria's story is a testament to the joy and fulfilment that comes from following your passion. From her early days of sewing scraps to creating intricate bag designs, her journey is truly inspiring. I had such a wonderful time chatting with her and I know you'll love the episode just as much.
